Birds at the mouth of Pismo CreekFriday, December 16, 2011 - Birds

Lots of birds along the shore today.  It is always fun to see the flocks of Sanderlings were running back and forth across the beach, in and out of the surf, chirping as they go. An assortment of gulls and other shore birds were gathered around the where Pismo Creek empties into the ocean, watching to see what goodies might show up.

Saturday, December 3. 2011 - Christmas is coming

The Christmas season is here.  This morning we watched the Holiday Parade on Grand Avenue, in Grover Beach, which is always fun. Lots of locals in the parade, including local school bands, old cars, and the Grover City Manager on horseback.  Then it was off to the Oceano Airport where they had a fly-in, along with the local Model A Club driving and displaying their cars (they were every color but black), and a band playing.  Quite a few aircraft came for the festivities, including a gyrocopter and some ultra-lights.  Then it was back to Grover Beach for more festivities and activities in Romana park,  We missed the movie under the stars as we were at a Christmas party with friends and family.  It was a wonderfully day to kick off the Christmas season.

Mermaid at Pismo BeachMonday, September 26, 2011 - A Mermaid on the Beach

We found a Mermaid laying on the beach, in the remains of what had been a monster on the beach.  The tides had washed away much of the monster.  Anyway, the mermaid was much prettier.

Band playing on Pismo BeachMonsters appear at Pismo BeachSunday,  September 26, 2011 - A Band and more Monsters

It was a lovely afternoon. A band was playing on the beach while being photographed.  Soon the band was joined by two surfer-girls who came to see the action. More Sand Monsters were being created by the Pismo Pier

A Monster at night in Pismo BeachSaturday, September 25, 2011 - A Monster on the Beach

It was a late night walk.  As we approached the Pismo Pier we saw a great mound loom before us in the dark.  It was a sand monster!

Saturday, September 25, 2011 - Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest Festival

Arroyo Grande's annual Harvest Festival continued today.  Today's activities kicked off with a parade through the Village of Arroyo Grande.  Other fun activities included a wiener dog race, diaper derby, beard judging contest, cow chip throwing contest (actually we stayed far away from that one), as well a bands and numerous food and craft booths.  Lots of fun was had by all.

An isthmus in the sand near Pismo BeachMonday, September 19, 2011 - An Isthmus

The Pismo Lagoon has been slowly growing larger and larger.  Only a narrow isthmus of sand separates the lagoon from the ocean.  A high tide will probably flood the isthmus, allowing the lagoon to drain into the ocean, until another sand bar is formed and the process starts over again.

9/11 sand castle near the Pismo Pier at nightSunday, September 11, 2011 - 9/11

Grover Beach held an impressive 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ramona Park that included a huge 30 foot American Flag.  After the ceremony the band Unfinished Business had the crowd dancing away with rollicking 1960's rock 'n roll.  That night we took a walk on the beach and found an impressive, large, 9/11 memorial sand castle on the beach.

Saturday, September 10, 2011 - The Dunites

We took a docent walk to the Dunes at Oso Flaco Lake lead by Jim Avila of the Central Coast Natural History Association .  He described the many artists and intellectuals lived in or visited the Dunite community that once existed in the sand dunes south of Oceano.  The Dunites were a loose community of artists, writers, mystics, hobos, deserters and dropouts.  John Steinbeck, Ansel  Adams, Edward Weston and Ernest Hemingway are among the many the many that visited the community and enjoyed the magic of the Dunes.  Maybe you should come to and enjoy the magic of the Dunes of Oceano.

Wednesday, September 7, 2011 - The Rib Line

It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day on the Central Coast.  Autumn is really the nicest time of year around here, with warm sunny days.  After a relaxing beach walk, which included a stop at the Pismo Farmer's Market, we had dinner at The Rib Line.  The Rib Line just opened up this past week on Grand Avenue in Grover Beach, near Highway 1 and the Amtrak station.  They already had a good reputation from their booths at farmers markets and their other location in San Luis Obispo. The food was delicious, the service attentive and the prices fair.  We especially enjoyed their chile. It had lots of meat, lots of flavor, a little heat and no beans.  Aside from the sit down diners, it was also doing a lot of take-out sales.

Sunday, September 4, 2011 - Juggler, Musicians and a Nerd

A lot of people were out enjoying the holiday weekend by the beach.  Yesterday was cool and the beach empty, but today the sun came out and so did the people.  A young man was practicing his juggling in the Grover Beach picnic area.  On the Grover boardwalk two musicians were playing guitar and violin duets.  On the beach near the Pismo Pier a young woman was busily working away on her laptop.  I guess everyone has a different way of enjoying the beach.

Friday, September 2, 2011 - Surfs Up!

A major storm off of New Zealand has brought high waves to the Central Coast of California, much to the joy of surfers and shore birds.  The surfers are out catching the waves, while hundreds of shorebirds line the beach to see what new goodies will be washed up in the next wave.

Monday, August 29, 2011- A Seal at Night

It was clear night.  The stars were bright and the Milky Way spread gloriously across the sky.  There was no moon, so it was dark. There was something moving in the distance,  which we assumed was a dog.  As we approached closer we saw it was a seal!  We got within about 10 feet.  We stared at the seal.  The seal stared at us.  Then we both went on our ways.  The seal lumbered into the surf, while we walked along the shore.

Sunday, August 28, 2011 - Pelicans Posing on the Pismo Pier

Pelican posing on the Pismo PierThough it may be hot in the Central Valley and Southern California, and the East Coast is suffering through a hurricane, it is beautiful here on the Central Coast of California.  The sunshine was warm and a slight sea breeze kept the temperatures a comfortable low to mid 70's.  We saw a large number of pelicans flying in formation up and down the beach.  They are such large, ungainly birds, it is sometimes a wonder they can fly at all.  A few Pelicans have taken up positions on the Pismo Pier, posing for tourists and hoping for handouts.  Some will allow people to approach within a few feet with their camera.

Lots of Music at the Stone Soup Festival in Grover BeachMerrie Mary Show at Stone Soup Festival in Grover BeachLots of kids activities at the Stone Soup Festival Saturday, August 27, 2011 - Stone Soup

The Annual Grover Beach Stone Soup Festival is in full swing this weekend at the Ramona Gardens Park.  It is two days of live music of all kinds, plus food, crafts, jugglers and other performers, kids activities, a run through the city and other activities.  We enjoyed the salsa judging contest, but after sampling 13 salsas, some of which whose heat built up with time, we were happy to find someone nearby that selling artisan Popsicles to cool our mouths.

Mark Wilder unicycler and juggler performing at the Pismo PierWednesday, August 24, 2011 - Pismo Farmers Market

This afternoon we stopped by the Pismo Beach Farmer's Market, held Wednesdays throughout the summer next to the Pismo Pier.  The Pismo Farmer's market has a nice selection of local fruits, vegetables, food, arts and crafts.  Mark Wilder performed a comedy juggling routine while perched on his seven foot unicycle, adding to the enjoyment of the afternoon.

Sunset near the Pismo Pier

Saturday, August 19, 2011 - Saw a Seal Swimming in the Surf

It was a lovely evening.  A thick fog bank hung some distance off-shore, keeping the temperatures comfortable all day.  As we walked along the shore we saw a seal swimming in the surf.  It would momentarily raise its head above the water, then dive back into the waves.

Monday, August 15, 2011 - Circus Train, Dolphins and an Otter

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus Red Circus train passed through town this afternoon on its way from Ontario to San Jose.  It was an impressive sight, there must have been well over 50 cars of all kinds, including a number of unique railroad cars I have not seen elsewhere.  Our walk was also impressive.  It was a warm and sunny.  As we walked along the beach from Pismo to Grover, a small school of dolphins was swimming parallel to the shore just beyond where the waves were breaking.  Swimming in the surf was a young otter.  It was quite an enjoyable afternoon.

Sunday, August 14, 2011 - Open Mike at the SLO Down Pub

Mark and Mike perform at the SLO Down PubThe (Side) Effects perform at the SLO Down PubBanana Soup performs at the SLO Down PubAfter a pleasant afternoon walk along the beach, we headed over to the SLO Down Pub on Grand Avenue in Arroyo Grande.  It was open mike night, so we were able to enjoy a variety of tunes from a number of the local bands.  The quality of the music was excellent and the performances relaxing and enjoyable.  While listening we enjoyed a delicious light meal from Ellie's Cafe, which shares the building.

Pismo CreekFriday, August 5, 2011 - The River Returns

Pismo Creek, which intermittently flows to the ocean between Pismo Beach and Grover Beach, has returned.  It usually disappears in summer due to the lack of rain.   Though we have not had much rain recently, it has reappeared and is again flowing into the ocean. Crossing it is not much of a challenge however. It is only a few inches deep.

Another pretty Pismo Beach SunsetSunday, July 31, 2011 - A Beautiful Sunset

It was a gorgeous sunset this evening.  The clouds glowed bright silver, before turning orange.  By the Pismo Pier two men were flying model airplanes that were lit up with small lights along the wing, fuselage and tail.  The planes looked bright and impressive as they swooped and danced in the air as evening set in.

Arroyo Grande Car Club Cruise NightFriday, July 29, 2011- Arroyo Valley Car Club Cruise Night

It is Arroyo Grande Cruise night, sponsored by the Arroyo Valley Car Club. Some 300 old cars and rods cruising up and down Grand Avenue. There were thousands of spectators, bands, and food. Great fun was had by all. The festivities continue with a car show in the Village of Arroyo Grande on Saturday.

Thursday, July 21, 2011  - Dinner and a Show

We had a enjoyable dinner at Old Juan's Catina in Oceano, then took in a show a the Great American Melodrama.  The show, Butch Cassidy and the Sunburnt Kid was hilarious.  It included a number of excellent original song and dance routines, including songs about Oceano.  A Cole Porter musical review followed the show.  I highly recommend seeing the performance.

Monday, July 18, 2011 - Walking a bird and walking a kite

A woman with a bird perched upon her shoulder strolled along the shore. I guess she was taking the bird out for a walk on the beach.  Further down a girl was walking along the shore, with her kite flying high over head.  It seemed appropriate as the kite featured two birds.

Sunday, July 17, 2011 - A Shooting Star

It was a warm evening.  We enjoyed a beautiful sunset as we walked from Grover Beach to the Pismo Pier.  It was dark by the time we headed back.  As we approached Grover Beach a meteor arched overhead, heading east, towards the hills, before disintegrating in the atmosphere.  Its long tail covered stretched over a substantial portion of the sky.  It was an impressive sight, though it lasted only a few seconds.

Sunday, July 10, 2011 - Happy 100th Anniversary Arroyo Grande!

Arroyo Grande celebrated the 100th anniversary of incorporation as a city this weekend.   Festivities included a huge street fair in the Village, numerous bands at various venues around town, tours of historic buildings, a parade, all topped off by an impressive fireworks display.  Happy 100th Birthday Arroyo Grande!

Monday, July 4, 2011 - Happy Independence Day

After the morning fog cleared, it was a beautiful, sunny day to celebrate Independence Day.  Pismo Beach had a wonderful fireworks display.  Hundreds of others were shooting fireworks off over the Ocean and around Grover Beach, creating a 4th of July fireworks display that lasted for hours.

Sand Castle at Pismo BeachSurfers at Pismo BeachSaturday, July 2, 2011 - A Magnificent Sand Castle

We saw a magnificent sand castle, decorated with red, white and blue sand, near the Pismo Pier.  As it was getting towards evening, the surfers were heading in, after an enjoyable day on the waves.

A walk on Pismo Beach going towards Grover BeachThursday, June 22, 2011 - Dinner at Brad's

It was another typical day on the Central Coast.  Low clouds and overcast in the morning giving way to a marvelous sunny afternoon.  Today we walked from the Grover Beach parking lot to Pismo Beach.  Getting there about dinner time, and being hungry, we stopped in at Brad's on Pomroy Ave. in Pismo.  I had a delicious tri-tip salad.  Service was excellent. Prices were reasonable. Brad's has both indoor and outdoor seating. We then worked off dinner by walking back to Grover.   Like us, there were many people walking along the beach enjoying the waves.

Sunday, June 19, 2011 - Happy Father's Day

View from Bluffs Trail looking towards Pismo BeachLooking towards Pirate's Cove from the Costal Bluffs Trail in Shell BeachIt was a busy day.  First to we enjoyed some lively country music by Monte Mills and the Lucky Horseshoe Band at the Grover Beach Sizzlin' Summer Concert Series in Ramona Park. Nice tunes, good voices and nice weather made for an enjoyable afternoon.  The weekly concerts are held in conjunction with the Grover Beach Farmer's Market, which brings in a variety of delicious local produce as well as local arts, crafts, food and beer.   In the evening we had a beautiful walk along the Bluffs Coastal Trail in Shell Beach.  The paved trail hugs the coastline and overlooks the Ocean, providing beautiful views of Pismo Beach and Avila Beach.  The trail skirts a community of impressive, palatial homes.  Along the trail we saw rabbits and deer.  After our walk we headed to Doc Burnstein's Ice Cream Lab in the Village of Arroyo Grande, where we enjoyed their delicious and unique flavors of locally produced ice cream in a fun atmosphere.

Saturday, June 18, 2011 - Le Petit Cafe

After checking out some more of the cars at the Pismo Beach Classic car show we ventured down Grand Avenue to try Le Petit Cafe. The recently opened "Parisian Cafe" is located at 1351 E. Grand Ave. in Arroyo Grande.   The food was excellent, though the menu limited primarily to sandwiches and a few salads (Pizza was listed, but not available).  Prices were reasonable.  Service was as might be expected from a Parisian Cafe - the meal took 2 hours due to the slow service.

Friday, June 17, 2011 - Cars, Cars, Cars!

Pismo Beach Classic Car ShowPismo Beach Classic Car ShowPismo Beach Classic Car ShowIt is Father's day weekend, so it is time for the Annual Pismo Beach Classic car show.  Hundreds of cars, including street rods, woodies, and all sorts of wonderfully restored and heavily modified cars of all eras.  Lots of fun, wonderful food, a good selection of vendors.  Come on out and have some fun in the warm Pismo sun and see some classy cars.

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 - Summer is here

It was a beautiful sunny, day.  Finally!  It has been an unusually cool spring,  We even had rain in June for the first time in I don't know how many years.  Anyway, the sun was shining, kids were playing in the surf.  An unusual light, very low, thin fog developed on the beach as we walked towards Pismo.  It extended just a foot or two above the sand, and just maybe a dozen yards inland from the water's edge. It was unusual and refreshing.

Saturday, June 11, 2011 - Party!

Lots of graduations this week, and a lot of graduation parties on the beach.  Numerous groups, ranging in size from about 4 to over 40, have set up campfires on the beach to celebrate.  The beach is large and long, which makes it easy to accommodate so many groups, all having fun.

Wednesday, June 8, 2011 - Ducklings

Lots of ducklings swimming with their mothers in the Pismo Lagoon. There must have been about 2 dozen of them.  We have been watching them as they grow up, from cute bundles of feathers into small ducks.  Soon they will fly away.

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 - Icebergs!

Bergy bits in Tracy Arm, near Juneau, AlaskaNo, not in Pismo Beach, we are on a cruise to Alaska.  Having a wonderful time and enjoying the scenery, but I do miss walking on the beach and sticking my toes in the water.

Tuesday, May 10, 2011 -  A Windy Day

Dozens of kiteboarders took advantage of the windy day to sail through the surf.  The large, colorful, kites was a pretty site over the waves.

New Bridge to the Pismo Beach Butterfly GroveMonday, May 9, 2011 - A new bridge

A number of improvements were recently completed along the boardwalk and trail between Pismo Beach and Grover Beach.  Included is a new bridge between the  Monarch Butterfly Grove and the North Pismo State Beach Campground.   The Campground is always popular, as it is just a short walk to the beach or to downtown Pismo Beach.

Wednesday, May 4, 2011 - Walking a goat

It was another warm, sunny day.  Many families were walking along the beach with the dogs.  One family was walking not only with their 2 dogs and children, but also a baby pet goat.  The youngest child was leading the goat.  You might say it was a kid leading a kid.

Pismo Beach, looking towards Port San LuisMonday, May 2, 2011 - A Warm, Sunny Day

It was beautiful, sunny afternoon.  Temperatures got up to the 80's.   The sea was calm.  Kids were playing in the surf and in the sand.  The surfers around Pismo Pier were waiting for some waves to ride.

Sunday,  May 1, 2011 - Ducks in a row

All traffic stopped on Highway 1 this morning between Grover Beach and Oceano,  when a mother duck lead her 4 ducklings across Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway.  Why did they cross the road?  Must have been to get to the other side.

The 9th Annual Pismo Beach Kite Expo was in full swing at the Grand Avenue entrance to the beach.  Exhibitors from all over the country and numerous kiteboarders were trying out equipment and showing off their stuff.  The sky was filled with their colorful kites as the kiteboarders zipped through the surf and performed wondrous tricks as the lept into the air.

We spent a pleasant Sunday afternoon listening to live Hawaiian music at the Red Dirt Coffee House in Arroyo Grande.  Red Dirt is a comfortable, family run, Hawaiian themed coffee house serving delicious Kona coffee drinks as well as a variety of sandwiches, pastries and other goodies.  It is a fun place to visit and unwind.

Saturday, April 16, 2011 - A Full Moon

The moon was full.  The waves were lapping quietly upon the shore. To the south there were dozens of fires glowing upon the beach. Families and groups were gathered around the fires singing, talking, roasting marshmallows and having fun in the warm, evening air.

A bright, yellow, Stearman bi-plane circled overhead pulling a huge banner “AMBER, WILL YOU MARRY ME?”

Friday, April 1, 2011  - Walking a Turtle

It was another warm, sunny day.  A lady was walking her pet turtle through the streets of Grover Beach.  The turtle was prettied up, with a bunch of artificial red roses tied to its back.  As might be expected, they were walking very slowly.

Thursday, March 31, 2011  - Warm and Sunny

It was a warm and sunny day, with temperatures in the low 80's.  Lots of people decided to head to the beach, though with miles of beach, there was plenty of room for everyone.

Tuesday, March 29, 2011 - Saw a Beaver

Today we say a beaver swimming in the lagoon that lies behind the houses along the Strand neighborhood.

Friday, March 11, 2011 - Tsunami!

A severe earthquake in Japan triggered a Tsunami alert along the California coast.  Starting around 2AM, those camping on the beach and staying in low areas near the Ocean were told to evacuate.  Campers were evacuated to the parking lots of nearby shopping centers.  The Tsunami finally hit around mid-morning.  The Ocean retreated, similar to a very low tide, then quickly washed back in.  Though the beaches were evacuated, many watched the Ocean from nearby streets and sand dunes.   By early afternoon all were allowed to return to the beach.  There was no significant damage in local area.   Morro Bay suffered some damage to boats and docks.

A message in a bottle washed upon the beachMonday, March 7, 2011 - A Message in a Bottle!

We found a message in a bottle that had been washed ashore.  Alas, the message was not a map to buried treasure, or someone looking for a soul-mate.  It was from someone wanting more whiskey as they drunk up all that was in the bottle!

Reflections on Pismo BeachSunday, March 6, 2011 - A Beautiful, Cloudy Day

It was a beautiful cool, cloudy day.  The sea was calm.  It was a lovely day to walk along the beach.

Families have fun at Grover BeachSunday, February 6, 2011 - Superbowl Sunday

While the fans freeze in Dallas, families are out enjoying the continued warm sunshine in Pismo Beach, Grover Beach and Oceano. There were young people enjoying themselves playing guitars and singing on the beach, children playing in the surf, people riding horses, walking their dogs, reading on the beach, and just laying in the sun.  Instead staying in the cold in the eastern part of the country, how about coming out to California's wonderful central coast and enjoy the beach, maybe visit some wineries, do some horseback riding, golfing, antiquing, or just enjoy the warm, sunny weather.

The giant Pismo Beach Clam sports a butterfly designSaturday, February 5, 2011 - Butterflies are free

Hundreds of Monarch butterflies continue to flit around the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove.  They enjoy the warm winter weather found in this area. The Butterflies fly hundreds or thousands of miles (no one is quite sure where they come from) to winter in Pismo Beach.   They start leaving for their summer grounds later this month.  Until then, one can spend hours watching them.  Of course, visiting the butterflies is free.

Parker visits the beach for the first time.Tuesday, February 1, 2011 - Parker's first visit to the beach.

Parker (age 7 weeks), took his first visit to the beach today.  He seemed more interested in sleeping as we walked along the shore enjoying the warm sunshine and beautiful scenery.

Friday, January 20, 2011 - Emerald Green Sunset

It was another beautiful, sunny day.  There was a beautiful green flash just as the sun set this evening.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 - A Beautiful Full Moon

It was a cloudless night.  The full moon was bright, lighting up the waves and beach with a soft, white, glow.   Some couples parked their trucks on the beach and were enjoying a romantic evening watching the waves.

Tuesday, January 18, 2011 - Dog Days of Summer

The warm, sunny weather continues.  The tourists that came for the Martin Luther King Day weekend have gone home and the locals were out in force, walking their dogs on the beach.

Monday, January 17, 2011 - Another sunny summer day in January

It was another great day at the beach as the warm weather continues, with temperatures in the 70's and 80's. If you are in the fog of the Central Valley, you should really consider coming to the sunny Central Coast. The beaches, hotels and restaurants are all uncrowded this time of year.  You can come again in Summer. When it is in the 100's in the Central Valley it is usually cool on the Central Coast.

Building a sculpture on Pismo BeachSaturday, January 15, 2011 - The Arboretum and a sunny afternoon on the beach.

In the morning we visited the Leaning Pine Arboretum at near-by Cal Poly University.  It has wonderful collections of colorful plants from around the world that grow well on California's Central Coast.  In addition there is a magnificent formal garden (totally unlike anything that will ever be found in my yard). One could even learn more about the plants by "calling" them with a cell phone.  The hot-houses were open, so one could wander through and see what was growing.  It was pleasant way to spend the morning.

In the afternoon we took our beach walk from the Grand Ave. Parking lot towards the Pismo Pier.  The temperature was about 80.  There were a number of people on the beach enjoying the warm sunshine and cool water.  Because the beach is both long and wide, it was not crowded.  Everyone could find their own spot.  One group was assembling a sculpture out of driftwood.  With the recent storms, a lot of branches have washed up on the beach.  Others were cycling, walking their dog, having a barbeque, or just enjoying a warm Saturday afternoon at the beach.

Oceano Beach is the only beach in California that allows vechiclesFriday, January 14, 2011 - Nice day to go for a drive on the beach

After a windy morning, it warmed to a beautiful, warm, sunny, afternoon.  It was a perfect day to go for a drive on the beach.  Oceano Beach is the only public beach in California that allows vehicles to drive upon it.  The State charges a small fee to drive on the beach.  Though we walked (walking is free), we saw plenty of people with their cars, trucks, and RVs, all enjoying the spring weather in January.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 - Hot and Cold

The temperature was in the 70's this afternoon.  Due to a busy schedule we were not able to start our walk until after sundown.  As we walked along the beach, the cool sea air was starting to displace the warm land air, resulting in alternating gusts of warm and cool air.  There must have been a difference of 10 to 15 degrees between the warm and cool air.

Shimmering sea as seen from Grover BeachTuesday, January 11, 2011 - The Shimmering Sea

It was another beautiful, warm day.  The ocean was calm.  Towards evening clouds moved in, forming a dazzling pattern of light upon the water.  A woman was walking along the shore singing to the sea.

Pismo Creek empties into the Pacific OceanSunday, January 9, 2011 - A short walk

It was another wonderful warm afternoon.  Just perfect for a pleasant stroll on the beach.  Our walk was cut short however. The recent rains have swollen Pismo Creek so that we can no longer easily cross the creek on our usual walk from Grand Avenue to the Pismo Pier.
